چکیده

With acoustic echo cancellation for hands-free communications, dominant nonlinearities occur at the loudspeaker and its amplifier. This contribution addresses memoryless nonlinearities as they are common, e.g., in loudspeaker amplifiers of mobile phone terminals. An NLMS (normalized least mean square)-type adaptation algorithm is investigated which allows simultaneous identification of a nonlinearity modeled by a polynomial, followed by a linear FIR system. For the analysis of the proposed algorithm, we introduce a signal-independent distance measure which provides more insight into the adaptation behavior than the commonly used ERLE (echo return loss enhancement) measure. A difficult issue with cascaded adaptive filters is the adaptation stepsize control, which is discussed in detail. A special stepsize control mechanism is derived and experiments with speech signals show that it is suitable for practical use.

Nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation with 2nd order adaptive Volterra filters

Acoustic echo cancellers in today' s speakerphones or video conferencing systems rely on the assumption of a linear echo path. Low-cost audio equipment or constraints of portable communication systems cause nonlinear distortions, which limit the echo return loss enhancement achievable by linear adaptation schemes. These distortions are a superposition of different effects, which can be modelled...

Adaptive Volterra filters for nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation

More than 20 years ago it was shown that adaptive Volterra filters can be used for telephone echo cancellation, but the inherent need for a large number of coefficients has inhibited their practical use. Recently, first attempts have been made to combat nonlinearities in the acoustic echo path of hands-free telephones, which are caused by low-cost audio components. As these attempts are based o...

Acoustic echo cancellation using NLMS-neural network structures

One of the limitations of linear adaptive echo cancellers is nonlinearities which are generated mainly in the loudspeaker. The complete acoustic channel can be modelled as a nonlinear system convolved with a linear dispersive echo channel. Two new acoustic echo canceller models are developed to improve nonlinear performance. The first model consists of a time-delay feedforward neural network (T...

Nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation using a Hammerstein model

In hands-free telephone or video conference application, there exists an acoustic feedback coupling between the loudspeaker and microphone, which creates the acoustic echo. Linear acoustic echo cancellers (AECs) are commonly used to remove this echo. However, they are unable to effectively cancel nonlinear distortions. This paper employs a Hammerstein model to describe the acoustic channel of a...

Nonlinear Echo Cancellation for Hands-free Speakerphones

Nonlinearities in the amplifier and loudspeaker of hands-free speakerphones limit the performance of linear adaptive acoustic echo cancellers, necessitating the use of nonlinear cancellation schemes. A nonlinear acoustic echo canceller based on the WienerHammerstein model structure of a cascade of linear, memoryless nonlinear, and linear elements is proposed. By modeling the true structure of t...
